Chronic Cough

Cough is a common complaint.  If it lasts more than 8 weeks, cough is described as chronic.  The presence of shortness of breath, with or without exertion, in association with persistent cough needs to be investigated without delay because it could be an indication of asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema.  Weight loss and fatigue when associated with a cough that persists over three weeks calls for immediate investigation.  Cough can originate from:

  • The lungs
  • The airways
  • The throat
  • The larynx
  • The nervous system

Allergy of the nose, sinuses, and lungs (asthma), are among the most common causes of chronic cough.  Don’t lose by delaying a complete investigation of a persistent cough. It may take only small steps to save a life.
